Haul # 4: MAY 2013

I have been wanting good brushes that I can use while learning everything about makeup. A lot of famous YouTube gurus and high end professional makeup artists all over the world use Mac brushes, some use Japonesque or Bdellium but they’re just too expensive. I’ve been hearing other people rave about a different brand of brushes though. A famous YT guru, Samantha Chapman, started her own line of makeup brushes called “Real Techniques.” For those who don’t know who Sam is, she’s one of the sister tandem from a YT channel called “pixiwoo.” People love these brushes because of their quality, packaging and affordability. These are made in China but are distributed by US and EU countries.

Enough with the introduction and history, let’s talk brushes. RT brushes are synthetic which means that they’re not made out of natural or real hair. Instead, they’re made of “Taklon or nylon[1].” RT brushes are “ultra-plush, synthetic taklon bristles are hand-cut and 100% cruelty-free[2].” Experts say that synthetic brushes are very much ideal for cream products. Concealer, foundation, lipstick, anything cream, synthetic brushes are a way to go because they don’t absorb too much product and they’re stiffer. Natural hair brushes are better for powder products and they’re much softer than synthetic ones. (Visit http://www.greendivamom.com/2009/07/30/comparing-natural-and-synthetic-makeup-brushes/ for more info on brushes.)

The RT set I have is the Core Collection. I got these brushes from Kalm Cosmetics (https://www.facebook.com/kalmcosmetics?fref=ts) for only Php 945 (excluding shipping fee), way cheaper than other online stores. The price is discounted only for pre-order. Other stores I know sell this set for Php 1,150. I have been eyeing on RT brushes for a while now and I finally have them!

This set “’includes 4 full-size brushes + case:

Detailer brush: precision cut to effortlessly conceal problem areas; or, use with lipstick for long-lasting shape and definition
Pointed foundation brush: Use with liquid foundation to build custom coverage

Buffing brush: ideal for full coverage application of powder and mineral foundation

Contour brush: delicately applies highlighter to contour or create sheer, soft-focus finish

Panoramic brush case is a 2-in-1 case + stand”

These brushes “have extended aluminum handles” which make them “light and easy to use.”

First impressions:

Price: In the states, this set costs about $18 or roughly about Php 700-800. Considering the prices of other stores, this was definitely a steal! I already get four brushes for only Php 945!

Packaging: I am in love with the packaging! The gold reflecting effect of the body is genius. The handles are easy to grip. I did notice that the detailer brush’s handle was sticky but I dealt with it. The only thing I didn’t like was the color of the labels on the brushes. They were too subtle. They could hardly be seen. If only they could change the font color or something. Nevertheless, I still love the packaging.

Place: By place I mean place where I bought it from. I have only heard of Kalm Cosmetics just recently because of a blog I was following on Tumblr. She was having a giveaway in partnership with Kalm Cosmetics. I checked it out and I found the best prices for these brushes. Kalm Cosmetics for me was definitely reliable because a lot of bloggers were having giveaway partnerships with them. No blogger would recommend a seller if they knew he/she couldn’t be trusted. Kalm Cosmetics isn’t as popular and as established as Digital Traincase (which I will mention in my next haul, SOON!) but they were making a name for themselves. They’re now the official distributor of RT brushes in the Philippines. They’re also the same for Mehron Cosmetics and Makeup Geek. If you don’t already know these brands, check them out. ;) Anyway, I paid the price plus the shipping fee via BPI. I sent them a copy of my receipt and they sent the product via LBC. Easy as pie. The only thing I didn’t like about them is that they didn’t contact me when the stocks arrived. I had to keep updates on their FB page but I wish they could have sent a personal text or something. But anyway, the rest of the transactions worked great.

Product: This is the most important part. I was really excited to get a hold of these brushes because people kept raving about them. When I opened them, I could not stop holding them and feeling so grateful that I finally had them! HAHA. I loved the packaging except for the sticky handle of the detailer brush. I tried to slide them on my face and I just fell in love. They did however have a few hair fall and stray hair as you can see in one of the pictures of the brushes.

What I really think about them:

I do love these brushes. But as I used them, my feelings for these brushes depreciated. HAHA. Dramatic isn’t it? Maybe I was just expecting too much. I expected them to be really soft on the skin but I’ve had a few scratchy experiences with the buffing brush. Plus, I felt that when I used the buffing brush, all the products, like BB Cream and concealer, were being removed. I was also hoping that the pointed foundation brush would be great but now I’m not so sure. It did leave a few streaks and I figured that using a brush for foundation was a total waste of product. I also wasn’t sure if the detailer brush worked. I used it for concealing my blemishes but I found that using my fingers worked just as well. My favorite is really the contour brush. It is a little bit scratchy but I love how it can apply blushes exactly where I want them. I still love the packaging. I want to love these, really. But I still have to find their best points. Maybe I’m still just trying to get used to using brushes. I don’t have a lot of cream products to try them with, being synthetic brushes that they are. I don’t have a lot of brushes to really compare them with that’s why I feel like they’re not working. I will definitely be using them from now on so I can get used to them and use them at my advantage. I will of course, keep you guys posted! I will do a more in depth review if only I could find out how to use them at their best.
