Thrift Finds: MAY 2013

I never really got to enjoy my summer as much as my other friends did since I had a summer class this year. Summer for me isn’t really just about going out and catching up with friends. Summer is hanging out at home, relaxing and doing absolutely nothing. For some people, especially students, summer means having no allowance, zero balance. As much as a lot of regular people want to have some shopping, most kids have tight budgets, just enough to spend for a jeepney fare. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is, ‘pag summer, walang pera, walang pang-gastos, walang pambili ng new clothes or shoes. As a student who does not have a uniform, having zero balance means I’d have to stick to my old and deteriorating clothes and shoes. I know I should always find a way to save money so I can at least replace my broken essentials like flats and jeans.

My solution?

UKAY-UKAY (UK), or as in the states, “thrifting.” I have been exposed to UK ever since I can remember. I call my mom, the Ukay-ukay Queen. She is the best at finding great clothes and shoes from thrift stores. The coolest thing is that we almost have the same shoe size. She’s 6-7 and I’m 5-6! The whole point of this is to show other people how great UK is if you have great taste, keen observation and most importantly, tawad powers.

I am well aware that a lot of people hate UK for a number of different reasons. Others don’t like the ambiance but most people say that UK is unsanitary. For me, it’s really just a matter of personal hygiene. After buying clothes from the UK, they’re washed before I actually wear them. As for shoes, I make sure that what I wear doesn’t have any weird smell or something. I’m pretty sure that sellers clean what they sell. So far, I have not experienced any irritations whatsoever with the stuff I buy from the UK. If you hate UK and hate people who buy and wear stuff from UK, then this is the wrong blog for you. J As much as I like to shop for new RTWs, if I’m kind of low on cash, thrift stores are a way to go.

In Tacloban, there are a lot of ukay-ukayans. I personally like to shop at air-conditioned ones simply because their items are more organized and they have better dressing rooms. As for shoes, my mom and I like to buy from this man who sells only at night at the side-walks of the old Land Bank just across Rusty Lopez. The guy actually texts my mom whenever he has new stocks and gives my mom discounts. If in case what we buy is damaged, we can have it replaced. Most of the shoes there cost Php150 but if you're a suki then you could get away with a pari for only Php 100! :)

I will be showing you four pairs of shoes that we recently got this month. I also styled them with my not-so-new clothes. So without further ado, here they are!

First off is this pair of office scarpins. They look so new so my mom got them for Php 150. They have this glossy finish which I like and the thing that’s really unique about them is that it’s closed on the outside part of the feet but open on the other side. I wore this outfit except for the shoes on our defense just last week and I thought it would look great with this pair.

Next, I’m loving this pair of suede pumps. They cost Php 150. I love the straps and the texture. It can however absorb a lot of dirt so maintaining the texture is a little difficult. I have yet to research on that. I just wore a pair of leggings and an A-line tank top. I just attached that ribbon for a nice girly touch.

Next up! I’m a little confused if this is a pair of platforms or wedges. But whatevs. I got these for Php 175. Two weeks ago, my family and I went on a road trip to Land Bank! Beside Gaisano, close to Land Bank, there were UK shoes being sold. Nothing was interesting except for this one! The color just really caught my attention. These reminded me of Jenn Im from clothesencounters on YouTube. I knew that no ordinary person would wear this without being judged. Still, I fell in love. I knew I was going to make it work, I had to. I styled it with my new dress that I hauled last month. I also used Nicole’s bag which was perfect because of the color. Tada!

Last but definitely not the least is this pair of docksides. My mom haggled on this pair so she only paid Php 100 for these babies! I’m not sure if they’re real leather but I love them! I love the color, the style, everything! I love this pair because I can use it for school and it seems so laid back. The only thing is, it is sorta damaged, guess where the glitch is. HAHA. Still, my friends actually thought these were new. Love love love! J I styled them with my cropped top also from a thrift store and my only high-waist shorts.

That’s it for this month’s thrift finds! I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more this June! If you have any questions, just feel free to comment or something. I’d still have to make a system for inquiries or something.
See you then!

Ciao!
